Mac Folder Icon Check: Copy image, Select small icon, Paste or restore

Change One Mac Folder Icon and Restore the Original Without Deleting Files

Give a Mac folder a custom picture through Get Info, fix an unavailable Paste command, and restore its original icon without deleting the folder.

To give one Mac folder a custom picture, copy an image from Preview, open the folder’s Get Info window, select the small icon at the top, and paste. To reverse the change, select that same small icon and choose Edit > Cut. You are changing the folder’s appearance, not removing its contents or converting its files.

This is useful when two working folders have similar names, such as a current project and an archive. Keep their names descriptive as well: a picture is a visual aid, not a reliable record of which copy is current, backed up or approved.

Prepare a harmless practice folder and picture

Start with an ordinary folder you own rather than a shared production directory, application or system folder. Create a disposable practice folder in a location where you can make changes. Use a simple image you created or are permitted to use. Avoid confidential screenshots, customer information and pictures that would be misleading when visible during screen sharing.

Apple’s current guide also describes folder colours, symbols and emoji, but the available controls depend on the macOS version. The custom-picture workflow below uses Preview and Get Info. Consult the matching version of Apple’s guide if your menus differ; do not install an unknown icon utility just because a newer colour option is missing.

Copy the picture, then select the correct icon

  1. Double-click your image to open it in Preview. If a different app opens it, use Open With to choose Preview.
  2. In Preview, choose Edit > Copy. You need image data on the Clipboard, rather than only a copied filename from Finder.
  3. Return to Finder and select the practice folder.
  4. Choose File > Get Info.
  5. In the Info window, click the small folder icon near the top, below the title bar.
  6. Choose Edit > Paste.

Now look at the folder in Finder. Check that it is the intended folder and that the picture is recognisable at its normal display size. Open the folder and confirm that its contents are still where you expect. A successful visual change does not verify the integrity of those contents or create a backup.

If Paste is unavailable or nothing changes

First check where you clicked. Apple specifically warns that selecting the large image in the Preview section of Get Info can leave Paste unavailable. Click the small icon at the top instead, then check the Edit menu again.

Next repeat the copy step inside Preview. Copying a file in Finder is not the same action as copying its displayed image. Return to the image, choose Edit > Copy, and retry on the practice folder before touching the real working folder.

If you cannot modify the chosen folder, stop rather than changing ownership or disabling protections to achieve a cosmetic result. Try the ordinary practice folder you own. A managed or shared location may have restrictions; ask its administrator before making changes. There is no reason to reset Finder preferences, delete caches or run privileged terminal commands as an initial response to a missing custom icon.

Restore the original without deleting the folder

  1. Select the same folder in Finder and open File > Get Info.
  2. Select the small icon at the top of the Info window.
  3. Choose Edit > Cut, as described in Apple’s restore instructions.
  4. Return to Finder and confirm that the standard icon has returned.

The target of Cut here is the selected icon in Get Info. Do not substitute a Finder file-deletion command or drag the folder to the Bin. If the folder already had someone else’s custom icon, agree on the change beforehand: restoring the original system icon is not a promise to recover an earlier custom picture.

Quick questions and final checks

Does this change every folder? These instructions target the selected item. They are not a system-wide theme replacement.

Can a distinctive icon replace a good filename? No. Keep meaningful names, and use our guide to show full filenames by resizing Finder list columns when names are truncated.

What should I check before using it for real? Verify the selected folder, readability at normal size, unchanged contents, and the restore procedure on your practice item. Do not assume custom appearance will survive every sharing, archive or cross-platform workflow.
